8. Beware of false prophets bearing gifts

9. Be wary of pop-ups

10. Tell everyone who uses your computer to follow in your footsteps

4. Install a firewall to further protect your computer

A firewall is another line of defence that you should be employing against hackers and other intruders. They work by controlling the flow of information to and from your computer and can hide your computer from hackers, detect potential threats and block them, stop confidential information being sent without your permission and even protect you from attacks launched through security holes in unpatched software.

Windows XP includes a personal firewall which will greatly improve your computer's security - when activated.

To activate it:

* Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Network Connections
* Right click on your internet connection and select Properties
* Click the Advanced tab and then select the tick box for Protect my computer and network
* Click on OK to apply the settings

If you are running an earlier version of Windows, you can install a personal firewall such as Norton Personal Firewall or McAfee Personal Firewall.

Remember, firewalls too need to be updated on a regular basis to ensure that your computer is protected.

Another thing. Don't think that by installing another firewall and activating Window XP's firewall will double your protection. Firewalls often conflict with one another, leaving you vulnerable to attack. Stick to one and make sure it is regularly updated.
