Most hackers, viruses and trojans are able to infect computers by exploiting weaknesses or security "holes" in operating systems, and with Windows being the most common operating system on PCs it is most commonly targeted.

As soon as Microsoft discover a problem, they issue updates or patches to fill these security holes - but they need to be downloaded and installed on your computer to work.

You can check for updates at the Microsoft Update website.
